Jean spent her working career as a primary school teacher and also advising teachers on the use of computers in schools. Her interest in Uganda came from Rev. Derek Burden’s visit in 1994 and his presentation in school showing the needs of children in Mityana. Realising this, Jean made her first visit in 1995 and founded the Mityana Charity. She has continued visiting almost every year since, encouraging other people to join her. Sponsoring children is her main aim, to give a hand up and through education, gradually lifting them out of poverty. In June 2026, she was awarded an MBE in recognition of more than 30 years of charitable work supporting families and communities in Uganda.
