Supporting grandmother-led families
Approximately 45% of our sponsored children live with their grandmothers. Despite their own advanced age and limited ability to work, many dedicated grandmothers provide love and care to multiple grandchildren. The Mityana Charity is keen to support the grandmothers to hrlp alleviate their struggles. This is achieved by providing essential household items (e.g. food, medication, bedding, clothing), improving household sanitation and hygiene, and enhancing the sustainability of their income generating activities.
A monthly donation of at least £15 enables the grandmothers to provide for their grandchildren’s basic needs. Money is provided to the grandmothers every three months. Many of them have used the funds to improve their social economic wellbeing including boosting their businesses and buying animals for rearing. Grandmothers who suffer from health challenges, including diabetes and hypertension, use the funds for medication or medical treatment. This financial support makes a tangible impact in the lives of these remarkable women and their beloved grandchildren.

Facilitating the economic empowerment of women
The Mityana Charity is dedicated to empowering women through our Village Saving Groups. We provide comprehensive training and support to women, including those under our education sponsorship programme, to enhance their financial stability and entrepreneurship.
The initiative to support Village Saving Groups brings together women in groups of 10–15. They participate in activities designed to meet the specific needs of each group, thereby equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed and grow their businesses. To date, we have established over 20 thriving groups. We provide ongoing support and regular business boosts to individual women, including grandmothers, to ensure the long-term sustainability of their enterprises.
This initiative aims to promote economic empowerment and self-sufficiency among women, enabling them to become catalysts for change in their communities and able to offer education support for their children.
