Improving maternal and infant healthcare

Uganda continues to face a high maternal mortality rate. In response to this pressing issue, the Mityana Charity is dedicated to enhancing maternal health outcomes by focusing on infrastructural development for healthcare facilities situated in rural areas.

7 Maternity Centres

Uganda continues to face a high maternal mortality rate, with 153 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. This alarming statistic reflects a range of issues including hemorrhages, high blood pressure, unsafe abortions, and infections. The scarcity of adequate healthcare facilities in rural areas exacerbates these problems, forcing expectant mothers to travel long distances for necessary care. Delays in accessing and receiving timely medical intervention often result in higher risks for both mothers and their newborns, sometimes leading them to rely on traditional birth attendants, which further elevates these risks.

The Mityana Charity, in partnership with PaCT, has supported the improvement of maternal health services in rural Ugandan communities since 2013. Our efforts focus on enhancing healthcare infrastructure by building and equipping maternity wards and supporting existing health facilities.

Make a difference…

Over the past seven years, we have successfully constructed five maternity wards and two health facilities. These centres now serve approximately 5,000 mothers and 2,000 newborns annually. Our initiatives are designed to ensure timely, quality medical care and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

As we move forward, the Mityana Charity remains committed to expanding these vital services to additional rural areas that lack essential resources. By continuing to improve healthcare infrastructure and accessibility, we aim to make a significant impact on maternal and infant health outcomes.
