The Mityana Charity sponsors children to attend primary schools in both non-government and government schools in rural areas. While government school fees are lower, children still need food and educational materials, especially textbooks, which will account for most of the sponsorship funds. Remaining funds are used to improve school furnishings and equipment, such as desks, benefiting the entire school community.
For only £25 a month or £300 a year, you could sponsor a child in primary education.
Boarding
At the end of Primary 7, children take the national Primary Leaving Certificate exam, which allows them to proceed to secondary school. Located near the equator, Mityana has equal hours of day and night, limiting study time outside of school. Most homes have only one paraffin lamp, making it difficult to read in crowded rooms. Children also spend daylight hours fetching water and helping in family gardens. As a result, nearly all primary schools require children to board in their final year to attend revision lessons. Sponsors are not committed to funding the boarding, but are encouraged to do so.
For an additional £18 per month or £216 for the year, you could have your sponsored child board during their final year in primary school.
Transferring to secondary school
The cost of sponsoring a secondary student in 2024 is £420 or £35 a month.
